One lucky winner* will be chosen during the months of August, September and October, 2022. The OFFICIAL New Athens Yard of the Month sign, with all of it's prestige, will be displayed in the winner's yard! Let's have FUN and celebrate our neighbors and this AMAZING community we call HOME. ♥
*The lucky monthly winner will be chosen by the most nominations received. In the event of a tie, the Village Clerk will determine the winner. A small prize, valued at $20.00 will be awarded to the Yard of the Month.
New Athens Homecoming Parade Huge Success!
It was a hot day, but the Village of New Athens looked cool in the Homecoming Parade! We extend our gratitude to Justin Majzel and all who put in so much hard work and effort to make Homecoming a great success. Mayor Behnken and the First Lady, Jane Behnken, smiled at the residents lining the streets for our first parade in two years. Village Clerk Amy Benwell and her young son, Jackson Benwell happily tossed New Athens sunglasses to spectators, while Deputy Clerk Nancy Ritter and her granddaughter, Serina Ritter bounced patriotic beach balls and candy to the excited crowd. The Village of New Athens float was pulled by Superintendent of Public Works, Chris Remick. Chris and Amy constructed the patriotic float as an homage to our great country, using a red, white and blue theme with plenty of stars and stripes. The group had a great time together on the project, working on team building and problem solving. They all look forward of many more years of parades to come!

The Village Board of Trustees voted to approve Ordinance No. 2022-02 Residential Refuse Policy at the June 20, 2022 board meeting.
Ordinance No. 2022-01 Annual Appropriations
The Village Board of Trustees voted to approve the Annual Appropriations Ordinance at the July 05, 2022 board meeting.
Okaw Valley Park Upgrades
Superintendent of Public Works, Chris Remick is excited to announce lighting upgrades to the hockey rink at Okaw Valley Park. Chris has been working diligently alongside Ameren to implement energy saving infrastructure upgrades to the Village. New LED lighting will be installed soon with little to no cost to the Village. We are so proud of Chris's team for their dedication to improving the Village, exploring all avenues to keep costs down.
Superintendent of Public Works Completes Class 1 & 2 of Wastewater School at SIUE
Superintendent of Public Works, Chris Remick recently completed Class 1 & 2 of Wastewater School at the Environmental Resources Training Center located at Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville. Chris has excelled in his role as Superintendent over the past year, eagerly taking any opportunity presented to learn more about the Waste Water Treatment Plant. He enjoys the biology and chemistry components of the day to day operations. We are very proud of you, Chris!
Girl Scouts Spread Summer Sunshine Around Town
The Girl Scouts have been BUSY this summer with their projects around town. We want to extend our sincerest thanks to our local troop for their hard work and dedication. The gorgeous planters full of bright blooms certainly add to the beauty of our town. Great work ladies!
Electric Vehicle Charging Station Rebate
Beginning July 1, 2022, the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) will offer rebates to public and private entities for the installation and maintenance of Level 2 and direct current fast charging (DCFC) stations. Rebate awards may cover up to 80% of the eligible project costs. Additional rebates are available for EV charging stations deployed in underserved and environmental justice communities.
